In 1951 eight of Yibin’s best traditional distilleries wereconsolidated into a single state-run distillery, the Yibin Distillery(Yibin Wuliangye Distillery after 1959). Distilled from a blend of sorghum, rice, glutinous rice, wheat and corn, its baijiuquickly became the standard-bearer of mixed-grain strong aromabaijiu.

On the strength of its premium spirits, Wuliangyehad grown to become China’s biggest distillery by sales volumeby the1990s. Wuliangye became a publiclylisted company in1998 and has interests in several spin-off distilleries, such asJinliufu and Liuyanghe. In 2011, Wuliangye became the firstChinese brand to advertise in New York’s Times Square. Ayear later, Yibin’s government began construction on the YibinWuliangye Airport, whose name sparked minorcontroversy.

Today Wuliangye’s massive production base covers 10 squarekilometres, employs more than 40 000 workers and has a statedannual output of 400 000 tonnes.
