Everything Dwayne Johnson touches seems to turn to gold, and after years refining his own recipe, Teremana Blanco Tequila is no exception. Launching only recently in March 2020, ‘Teremana’ has become one of the fastest-growing celebrity-endorsed spirit brands of all time. By the end of 2020 it had already sold 300,000 cases in the US alone, accounting for 1% of all tequila imported from Mexico into the US.

Unlike other celebrity-endorsed spirits where the star is just the ‘face’, Dwayne Johnson takes an active role in the company, having had aspirations of owning a tequila company for over a decade before. Teremana Blanco is a beautiful, smooth, colourless spirit with a herby/peppery aroma, and the taste delivers on the aroma’s promise, featuring flavours of black pepper, herbal agave notes and a touch of citrus.

Teremana Blanco Tequila is made from 100% Blue Weber agave, hand-picked and trimmed by local farmers in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The agaves are then roasted in a brick oven for three days to convert the components into fermentable sugar before the cores of the plant are shredded to extract the sugary-sweet liquid. The liquid is fermented in open tanks following the extraction, a process which gives it a lot of it’s flavour, before finally being distilled in handmade copper pot stills. Whereas añejo tequilas are aged for over a year, and reposado tequilas are aged from 2 months up to a year, blanco tequilas such as Teremana Blanco are not aged at all.

But what about the name? The name ‘Teremana’ is an homage to Johnson’s Polynesian heritage. ‘Tere’ comes from the Latin word for ‘earth’, whereas ‘mana’ means ‘spirit’ in Polynesian, together meaning ‘spirit of the earth’.
