Cognac is a premium, amber-colored type of brandy produced exclusively in the Cognac region of France. It must be made from specific white grapes, distilled twice in copper pot stills, and aged in French oak barrels for a minimum of two years.

🍇 How it’s Made

The Base: It is made from specific white wine grapes (primarily Ugni Blanc). The wine is fermented until it is very dry and highly acidic—making it perfect for distillation.
Distillation: The wine is twice distilled in traditional copper pot stills, resulting in a clear, high-proof spirit known as eau-de-vie.
Aging: The spirit is matured in French oak barrels, which give Cognac its signature amber color and complex vanilla, caramel, and woody flavors.

🏷️ Quality & Age Classifications

Cognac blends various ages of eau-de-vie. The age on the label corresponds to the youngest spirit in the blend:

V.S. (Very Special): Aged for a minimum of 2 years.
V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale): Aged for a minimum of 4 years.
X.O. (Extra Old): Aged for a minimum of 10 years.

🥃 How to Drink It

Neat: Pour it into a tulip-shaped glass or snifter at room temperature, and sip it slowly to enjoy its complex aromas.
With Water: Adding a few drops of room-temperature water opens up the aromas, much like whiskey.
In Cocktails: Younger Cognacs (like V.S.) are excellent in classic cocktails, such as the Sidecar (Cognac, orange liqueur, and lemon juice) or a Vieux Carré.
