Mortlach Distillery was founded in 1823 by James Findlater and his two partners Donald McIntosh and Alexander Gordon. Mortlach was the first of Dufftown’s seven whisky distilleries, the second was Glenfiddich, which was founded by William Grant who had been production manager at Mortlach. Mortlach was the only distillery in Dufftown for over 60 years. Mortlach’s main claim to fame is that it was the first of seven distilleries to be built in and around Dufftown. The distillery operates a unique distillation process which distils the spirit two and a half times. The distillery is currently owned by Diageo and has a capacity of 3 million litres per year. Mortlach is still an important component of the Johnnie Walker blends. This distillery is well known for their use of quality sherry casks during maturation but also for their rich robust spirit.
For more than a century, Gordon & MacPhail has been entrusted with new-make spirit from more than 100 Scottish distilleries to mature in their way, using casks made to their exacting specifications. The ‘Distillery Labels’ range is a celebration of these long standing and unique relationships. The history of this range heralds back to their very beginnings – to the days when distillery spirit was produced primarily to be used in blends. Because of the strong working relationships Gordon & MacPhail had with distillery owners, they would bottle and sell the spirit they created as single malt on the condition that they used their ‘house’ label with the caption “bottled by Gordon & MacPhail”.
This bottling by independent bottlers Gordon & MacPhail is part of the Distillery labels series. It has been matured in sherry casks for no less than 25 years and bottled at 46% abv.
