Douglas Laing's Rock Island 21 Years Old Maritime Island Blended Malt Scotch Whisky ABV 46.8% 70cl With Gift Box
DESCRIPTION
Rock Oyster was the fourth addition to what became the Douglas Laing family of Remarkable Regional Malts, introduced in 2015 and produced using only Island malt whiskies. The other family members include Big Peat, Scallywag, Timorous Beastie and Epicurean blends produced using malts from Islay, Speyside, the Highlands and the Lowlands, respectively.
Douglas Laing started with an Islay blended malt called Big Peat. Soon the range included a Speyside blended malt called Scallywag.
Rock Island is a similar idea but for Island whiskies. Includes Arran and Jura as well as some Orkney and Islay whiskies.
This particular bottling is a limited edition 21 year old as opposed to the standard non-age statement.
Tasting Notes
Maritime, Salty and slightly smoky
Nose
Some charcoal, rock pools and salty sea spray, with hints of polished leather and sal ammoniac, but also a damp forest floor. Clearly some citrus fruits too, as well as candy canes and vanilla custard.
Palate
A little less of a high flyer than the nose. Somewhat spicy (pepper), with a slightly sour and rubber-y note. Quite a bit of peat too, with a hint of iodine. At this age, I had hoped for something a little more elegant.
Finish
Lingering peat and rubber.
