After being distilled for the first time in 2022 - the same year Edradour was bought by Signatory Vintage - the first Ballechin was released in 2006. Peated to 50 ppm, in just two decases this malt has become a leading reference in the world of peated whiskies. Throughout the tasting this version selected in September 2021 and matured in a cask previously used for Sicily's most famous wine reveals amazingly powerful notes of peat. And yet, whenever it loosens its grip, beautiful honeyed, floral, jammy and exotic oases apper and highlight the role played by the Marsala cask.
Ballechin is the heavily peated single malt produced at Edradour. When Signatory Vintage took over the distillery in 2002, they installed former Laphroaig distillery manager, Iain Henderson, as Director of Operations, and inspired by his previous place of work, the first peated distillation at Edradour took place in 2003. Generally matured in a range of different wine casks, the first bottlings were turned out in 2006.
This whisky was distilled in Ocotber 2010 and aged in single ex-Marsala hogshead #284 before being bottled in August 2022.
